Wadada Leo Smith (born January 3, 1952) is an American jazz tenor saxophonist and composer. He is known for his use of extended techniques, including the use of the guitar pick to create sounds. Smith was born in New York City and grew up in San Francisco, California where he attended Boys' Latin School. After graduating from the University of California at Berkeley with a major in music, he studied at the New England Conservatory under Anthony Braxton and Leonard Meyer.
